Wastewater Treatment Facility

Completed – November 2008

Calcarb Limited is a manufacturer and global supplier of premium high purity Carbon Bonded Carbon Fibre (CBCF) based Rigid Insulation and precursor materials for vacuum and controlled atmosphere furnaces.

B+W designed, installed and commissioned a new system to treat wastewater generated by wet carbon moulding processing to allow recycling and re-use within the moulding process.  The wastewater produced at this plant contained a mixture of residual carbon-fibre, phenol-based resin and suspended solids.

Extensive laboratory testing and on-site pilot trials were conducted to identify the most appropriate treatment process.  Removal of residual fibres and solids was achieved via chemical flocculation and solids separation using Dissolved Air Flotation.  Further chemical treatment enabled decomposition of the residual phenol followed by effluent filtration prior to discharge.

Following successful installation of the treatment system, our client benefited economically from the recovery and re-use of wastewater.  Furthermore the environment was protected by removing phenol which has a devastating effect on aquatic life.
