B + W awarded Jamestown Swimming Pool, St. Helena
October 2017
A remote volcanic outpost in the South Atlantic Ocean, St. Helena is one of the world's most isolated islands. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha The small Island is well known as Napoleon’s exile, where he was imprisoned by the British in 1815 for 6 years. Following his death in 1821 he was initially buried at the Sane Valley, his second choice of burial site, until the French were given permission to have his corpse returned to France, nineteen years after his death. However visitors to the island can still visit his empty tomb. This tropical island measures about 16 x 8km, with a small population of around 4500 people. Jamestown swimming pool is the only leisure facility on the island. The facility boasts a large 33 x 11m open air pool with a small children’s pool attached. This refurbishment project was led by the St. Helena Government in order to replace all the existing underground pipework due to leakage along with upgrading the filtration system to PWTAG standards. B+W were awarded the contract to design + supply all the new pipework along with a complete filtration plant including; pumps, filters, chemical control system and electro chlorination. Time was of the essence during this project, therefore in order to try and combat the long commute to St. Helena, B+W had to source the majority of the equipment from a supplier in Johannesburg and Europe. This was then shipped via Cape Town, South Africa to St. Helena, taking up to 3 months in total for the transportation of all goods. Both pools were originally operated using only fresh water; however with fresh water being at a premium on the island the new filtration system by B+W was designed to incorporate the use of salt water from the Atlantic Ocean. The works are to be installed by a team from the water utilities department based on the island of St. Helena and B+W are to attend site between September and October to commission the works. The travel for the B+W commissioning personnel will involve a flight to Cape Town or Ascension Island followed by a 3 -5 day boat journey to the secluded island of St Helena.
